The region’s beer industry ranks highly among readers of an international website dedicated to rating beer.
RateBeer’s set of 2014 “Best” rankings feature several Grand Rapids locations in the ranking of “Top Places to Have a Beer in the World.”
Bell’s Brewery in Galesburg and Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids were also recognized in the rankings.
In the U.S. section, Founders Brewing Co., HopCat and Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids are all ranked in their categories.
The rankings are based on reviews by readers of RateBeer, including nearly a million beer reviews.
The rankings were released last week through today.
Breweries and beer
Founders Brewing Co. appears in U.S. brewer taproom section in the ranking “Top Places to Have a Beer in the World.”
Out-of-state brewers such as Hair of the Dog Brewing Co., Cigar City Brewing, Jester King Brewery and AleSmith Brewing Co. also appear in the ranking.
Founders’ KBS ranks as the top beer from the state. Founders also has four beers in “The Top Beers in the World” ranking, including its Backstage Series #2 CBS, KBS, Backwoods Bastard and Breakfast Stout.
Dark Horse Brewing Co. in Marshall is the only other Michigan brewery to land in the “Top Beer” ranking with its Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th Imperial Stout.

Founders, Dark Horse, Odd Side Ales in Grand Haven, B. Nektar Meadery in Ferndale and Schramm’s Mead in Ferndale are Michigan companies that also appear in the top 100 brewers ranking.
It joins brewpubs like Russian River Brewing, New Albanian Brewing Company Pizzeria and Public House, Redlight Redlight Beer Parlour & Brewery and Wicked Weed Brewing.
Siciliano’s Market appears in the U.S. grocery section ranking of "Top Places to Have a Beer in the World" for the third year in a row. It is also the top grocer in Michigan in the subregion ranking of "Best Places for Beer."
Also ranking as a top American beer grocer are John’s Grocery, Jungle Jim’s International Market Fairfield, DeCicco Food Market Ardsley and Whole Foods Market Chandler.
Detroit’s Slows Bar B Q appears in the U.S. restaurant section in the ranking of “Top Places to Have a Beer in the World.” It is also the top restaurant in Michigan in the subregion ranking of "Best Places for Beer."
Grand Rapids will see a Slows open in the Downtown Market later this year.
