A publication has named three employers in West Michigan among the tops for corporate responsibility.

Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation, Battle Creek-based Kellogg Company and New York-based Pfizer — which has a large West Michigan presence — were ranked among the 2019 “100 Best Corporate Citizens” by Corporate Responsibility Magazine, or CR Magazine, this month.

“We believe transparency matters — to advance accountability, drive progress, build trust and raise standards,” CR Magazine’s editors say.

“Over the ‘100 Best Corporate Citizens’' 20-year history, corporate responsibility and sustainability has mainstreamed. … We welcome this progress.”

Methodology

To create the ranking, CR Magazine’s research partner ISS-ESG evaluated the 1,000 largest U.S. companies on their environmental, social and governance disclosure and performance using publicly available data, such as company websites, corporate reports and 10-Ks, and “reputable” third-party firms.

Information in various categories was considered: actions toward climate change and the environment; finances; governance; human rights; employee, stakeholder and public relations.

The companies were then ranked by weighted averages across the pillars and given an overall score.
