Two West Michigan hospitals have been named to the 2013 list of 100 Great Hospitals in America by Becker’s Hospital Review.

The list appears in the March 29 online edition of Becker's Hospital Review and features six Michigan hospitals: Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids; Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo; Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak; Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit; Providence Hospital, Southfield and University Hospital, Ann Arbor.

In the publication’s 2012 100 Great Hospitals in America list, five of the same six Michigan hospitals were listed. Henry Ford Hospital was not listed last year, but the list did include Munson Medical Center of Traverse City.

Each of 100 organizations, according to Becker’s Hospital Review, “have an interesting story behind them, some dating back to the 18th century, and contribute to the American healthcare landscape, whether they be community hospitals or academic medical centers, large flagship facilities or small specialty hospitals. These organizations continually improve upon themselves and are innovators for medical treatments, research, technology and care delivery. These hospitals are home to medical breakthroughs and act as anchors of health within their respective communities.”

Becker's Hospital Review is a monthly magazine, which reports business and legal news related to hospitals and health care systems. The Chicago-based publication targets high-level hospital executives and board members.

Butterworth Hospital

Becker's Hospital Review notes that Butterworth was founded in 1873 and describes it as a teaching hospital with ties to Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and is “Magnet-accredited for nursing excellence and serves as an anchor for healthcare in its community. More than 8,000 babies are delivered at the hospital each year. In 2012, Leapfrog Group named Spectrum Butterworth one of its Top Urban Hospitals, and U.S. News & World Report also ranked it as one of the top in the nation for gynecology and diabetes and endocrinology in its 2012-13 rankings.”

“Spectrum Health continues to be recognized for its dedication and commitment to excellent patient care,” said Matt VanVranken, executive vice president, Spectrum Health Delivery System. “It reflects well upon our employees and physicians.”

To develop its annual list, the Becker editorial team accepts nominations, conducts research and considers other hospital ranking sources such as U.S. News & World Report, Truven Health Analytics' 100 Top Hospitals, HealthGrades, Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the Studer Group and Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipients.

The list is not a ranking. Hospitals are displayed in alphabetical order, and Becker also states it is “not an endorsement of included hospitals or associated health care providers.” Hospitals cannot pay to be included on this list.
