A Grand Rapids coffee shop will open a second location on Bridge Street NW.
Sparrows Coffee Tea and Newsstand will open its second coffee shop in June at 442 Bridge St. NW. The company opened its first location 10 years ago on Wealthy Street SE in the Uptown district.
The 1,000-square-foot West Side location can hold up to 49 people, along with the new coffee bar and newsstand, featuring newspapers and magazines from across the country. Works by local artist Jeff Kraus will be featured in the location.
“We were interested in offering the same high-quality coffee and community space to the West Side as we have always offered to Uptown on Wealthy Street,” Sparrows owner Lori Slager Wenzel said.
“We are fortunate to celebrate 10 years of business by opening a second store and are looking forward to serving the West Side community this summer.”
The location will serve many of the same menu items as the original Wealthy Street shop, including tea, cold-pressed juice and house-made syrups.
Expected to be open seven days a week, Sparrows plans to hire for 10 jobs.
“Coffee shops are the places where friends can get together, and they help create vibrant neighborhoods,” Grand Rapids First Ward Commissioner David Shaffer said. “We’re excited to welcome Sparrows as a new destination for West Side workers, neighbors and students.”
Sparrows will be the latest retailer opening up along the short stretch of Bridge Street on the west side of U.S.-131, with a flurry of openings during the past year, including New Holland Brewing Co.’s The Knickerbocker, Mitten State, The Sovengard, Butcher’s Union and One Bourbon.
“Sparrows’ new location contributes to our vision of developing a thriving corridor the community can enjoy,” said Mike Lomonaco, director of marketing and communications at Open Systems Technologies. “This new coffee shop complements the current mix of restaurants, bars and retailers on Bridge Street and will attract even more people to the area.”
