Today’s young professionals fuel tomorrow’s achievements

Taking on diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s requires innovation. Every day, scientists, physicians and advocates across the globe work to tackle the challenges posed by these diseases — challenges that also require critical thinking and collaboration.

As we evaluate a legacy of scientific advances, it’s important to remember the benefits of a fresh perspective. If we are to elevate our united research efforts, we must empower numerous stakeholders to bring their unique strengths to the table.

It’s been proven that diverse teams tend to solve problems better. Today’s young people are filled with fresh perspectives and new ideas for tackling difficult issues. We see this in our labs, as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows push the questions that drive innovation. They focus on their work with pinpoint precision and help accelerate progress in biomedical research.

In business, especially in an entrepreneurial environment, familiar processes can be positively disrupted by fresh minds. Sometimes it comes through a quick comment or an unassuming question — you know the type, the “why do we/don’t we do it this way?” that leaves room to challenge conventional wisdom and either prove or disprove its worth.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we should ignore the experience of those who have been in the field for decades. Institutional knowledge has an immense value; it’s the foundation of successful organizations across the globe. At the same time, young professionals play a key role in fueling that success. Our society must evolve, and to do so, we need input from the people who will be building a better future for generations to come. Every generation builds on the work done by previous generations.

Van Andel Institute is deeply committed to creating that better future, and it does so through a mix of fresh passion and experienced insight. Young scientists play a key role in our research facilities, bringing new ideas that can be integrated into existing models. It truly is a mix that allows for success, blending modern thoughts with decades of experience. In this work environment, no one should be afraid to be challenged: old processes and innovative techniques are evaluated on equal ground, and the best path forward is built on a combination of both.

Young professionals’ perspectives similarly can improve the communities they live and work in, developing a higher quality of life for themselves, their neighbors and the next generation. Our community is blessed with many young professionals who actively support their passions — donating their time, skillset or monetary support to worthwhile causes. We must encourage them not only to get involved, but to remain involved. An afternoon of volunteering or a one-time donation is a laudable start, but society benefits most when an energetic new generation assumes a lifelong dedication to driving innovation and helping others.

Van Andel Institute has been supported by a strong community of young professionals for more than 15 years. This network, known as VAI’s JBoard Ambassadors, includes up-and-coming individuals from West Michigan and beyond who are committed to a common goal: They believe in the value of supporting biomedical research and educating the next generation of scientific leaders. It’s a vibrant community full of fresh perspectives and innovation, and the commitment of these young professionals is invaluable in supporting the Institute. Best of all, it’s a symbiotic relationship: Our JBoard Ambassadors leverage their combined business acumen to raise awareness about VAI’s work while building their own networks of support and career growth. At the same time, this network creates a strong foundation of community support that underpins the Institute’s mission of pursing a healthier future for all.

We are committed to developing opportunities for young professionals internally and externally, creating the right mix of institutional expertise and contemporary thinking to build success for future generations. No one can shape the future on their own; it will take the nourishment of new ideas and the focus of proven methods to solve societal problems. When young professionals get involved, institutional and community impact grows exponentially. By working, learning and growing as one — regardless of age or experience — we will create a stronger, more vibrant community, together.
