In his Aug. 7 column for grbj.com (“State leaders should reject EPA’s carbon rule”), Christopher Douglas claims that President Obama’s Clean Power Plan will hurt Michigan’s communities of color. Nothing could be further from the truth.
By improving air quality, the president’s plan will prevent up to 6,600 premature deaths. This is important for people of color, who tend to live closer to polluting coal plants and suffer higher rates of pollution-related illnesses like asthma.
Douglas argues that clean power will somehow increase poverty. The opposite is true. Not only will the president’s plan save families an average of $85 a year on energy bills, it will open the doors to high-wage, healthy jobs in fields like energy efficiency, solar and wind.
Those of us who have spent years working closely with communities of color support the Clean Power Plan. We know that it will pave the way to health, wealth and opportunity for more Americans.
