The Urban League of West Michigan announced the promotions of three team members to manager: Javonte’ Tubbs, Kari Sherman and Ken Ly.

“It gives me great joy to recognize these three individuals,” said Urban League President and CEO Eric Brown. “I have observed and am moved by the way they individually and independently demonstrate energy and enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence while also possessing an in-depth understanding of their divisions and the importance of the Urban League voice and representation within each sector.”

Tubbs, chosen to manage the education division for youth development, is an experienced educator and community organizer. His background includes six years of community engagement through the league in a number of areas, always centrally focused on youth and their development.

Sherman, managing the housing division, has an extensive background in housing and homelessness prevention and has worked with hundreds of individuals and families to ensure housing stability. She embraces case management with a full heart and always is eager to make a positive impact on client-guests who turn to the league for assistance.

Ly, a fierce health advocate for health equity and tobacco prevention, will manage the health division and is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of all West Michigan residents.

“All three individuals — Kari, Javonte’ and Ken — bring extensive experience in their respective fields and all have earned a well-deserved promotion to manager,” Brown said.

The Urban League is the city’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering Black people/African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. It will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2023.
