An executive from Metro Health became the newest member of the Convention and Arena Authority last week. Board members unanimously selected Floyd Wilson Jr. to fill the seat vacated a few months ago by Clif Charles.
Wilson, an executive vice president of Human Resources at Metro Health, will represent the Convention and Visitors Bureau on the seven-member board that oversees operations at DeVos Place and Van Andel Arena.
“He is just a really engaging individual,” said CAA Chairman Steven Heacock.
“He is an extremely talented man,” added CAA board member Joseph Tomaselli.
Wilson was one of three candidates nominated for the post. Carlos Sanchez of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Kathleen Ponitz of Progressive AE were also nominated. The CVB board refrained from recommending a selection.
“If we weren’t under state law and had more authority, I would have extended the board by two more,” said Heacock in reaction to the quality of candidates from the bureau.
CVB President Doug Small said Wilson also will take a seat on the bureau’s board of directors. Sanchez and Ponitz are current members of that board. Ponitz is a past chair of that board.
Charles directs human resources for Gordon Food Service and has sat on the CAA board since its inception in 2000. He has led the authority’s diversity efforts the past few years and also served on the CAA’s Finance Committee. Charles resigned from the CAA a few months ago because he could no longer devote the amount of time needed to fill the post.
