Awards Recognize Construction Leaders

    GRAND RAPIDS — Numerous builders, masons, electricians and engineers filled the Ambassador Ballroom at the Amway Grand Plaza last Tuesday night for the 2001 Construction Awards of Excellence Program, sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors, West Michigan Chapter (ABC/WMC).

    Entries were submitted by general contractors and subcontractors who are proud of the work their employees performed. More than 40 judges, comprised of area architects, engineers, facility managers, educators and building inspectors, selected the “best of the best” from 81 entries in 40 different categories. Forty-one projects received awards at the program.

    The projects entered in this year’s program were judged to be excellent representations of construction quality at its finest and the quality that is characteristic of members of ABC. Each project represents its own unique characteristics and technical demands.

    The categories and winners are as follows:

    Concrete — residential: Van Laan Concrete Construction for the Van Kampen residence; Concrete — pre-cast: Spancrete/Great Lakes for the Steelcase Wood Plant; Concrete: Kent Companies for the Steelcase Wood Plant.

     Masonry — under $1 million: Helms Masonry for Cutlerville Christian Middle School; Masonry — $1 million to $4 million: CRW Masonry for Kalamazoo Valley Community College addition and renovation; Masonry — over $4 million: Burggrabe Masonry for the GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center.

    Structural Steel — erection: Advanced Steel Construction for the Wyoming Public Library; Structural Steel — fabrication under $1 million: Van Dellen Steel for the Hilltop Center; Structural Steel — fabrication over $1 million: P&K Steel Service for Hamilton High School.

    Roofing — single ply: Langerak Roof Systems for Steelcase Wood Plant; Roofing — metal: Buist Sheet Metal for Cappon House Museum, Holland Historical Trust; Roofing — slate: Modern Roofing for the Schiefler residence; Architectural Sheet Metal: Reliable Sheet Metal for the GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center; Miscellaneous Metals: Christopher Metal Fabricating for Rush Creek Bible Church Steeple.

    Electrical — under $1 million: Allied Electric for the GVSU Keller Engineering Building; Electrical — $1 million to $2 million: Toering Electric for Five Star Brands; Electrical — over $2 million: Allied Electric for GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center.

    Process Piping: River City Mechanical for Richard M. DeVos Center;

    Mechanical — under $1 million: Pleune Service Co. for Resurrection Life Church; Mechanical — over $1 million: Quality Air Heating & Cooling for GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center; Fire Protection: Brigade Fire Protection for Van Andel Institute for Education & Medical research; Interior Finishing: Ritsema Associates for St. Nicholas Antiochian Church; Millwork: Pioneer Inc. for GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center.

    Renovation — $1 million and under: Pioneer Inc. for Imperial Ballroom in Amway Grand Plaza Hotel; Renovation — $1.5 million to $3 million: D&D Building for Gilda’s Club; Renovation — over $4 million: Elzinga & Volkers for the Gerald R. Ford International Airport; Historical Renovation: Triangle Associates for Design Plus Inc. office.

     Pre-Engineered — under $1 million: Pinnacle Construction Group for Carter Products; Pre-Engineered — $1 million to $2.5 million: C.D. Barnes Associates for Greystone International Inc.; Pre-Engineered — over $2.5 million: Pioneer Inc. for Patrick A. Thompson M-TEC.

     Commercial Construction — under $1 million: Lakewood Inc. for The Ravines Clubhouse; Commercial Construction — over $1 million: Johnson Construction Co. for Grand Rapids Eye Institute; Industrial Construction: Owen-Ames-Kim-ball Co. for Steelcase Wood Plant.

     Institutional Construction — under $3 million: Tridon Construction Co. for White Lake Community Library; Institutional Construction — $3 million to $6 million: Johnson Construction Co. for Resurrection Life Church; Institutional Construc-tion — $6 million to $11 million: Owen-Ames-Kimball for Frederik Meijer Gardens Phase II; Institutional Construction — $11 million to $20 million: Erhardt Construction for Central Wesleyan Church’s new worship center; Institutional Con-struction — $20 million to $25 million: Triangle Associates for Cook Valley Estates; Institution-al Construction — $25 million to $45 million: Pioneer Inc. for GVSU Richard M. DeVos Center; Institutional Construction — over $100 million: CSM Group for Bronson Hospital.

    The Safety Award was given to Van Laan Concrete Construction.

    “There is a quality and a uniqueness to this year’s award winners,” said Mark Westmaas, 2001 president of ABC/WMC. “These winners and the other members of ABC play a significant role in making this area an attractive place for businesses to expand and locate. This is a sampling of those outstanding businesses.”
