LANSING — HB 4261 was sent to the House committee on commerce last week.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Michael Sak in February and would let the convention and visitors bureaus in Kent and Ingham counties collect an additional 2-percent tax on lodging bills from hotels and motels with 35 or more rooms.
“This is enabling legislation. This is not a general tax,” said Sak, D-Grand Rapids. “It’s proposed as 2 percent in the legislation. But the (Kent County) CVB said it would only ask for 1 percent.”
The additional 1 percent would give the bureau an estimated $1 million in revenue.
