The family that owned Brick Road Pizza Co. shut the restaurant’s doors after 13 years in business.

Co-owners Cindy and Jody Talbert and family said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, Jan. 25, the restaurant — which offered appetizers, pizza, salads and an array of vegan and gluten-free offerings before many local restaurants were doing so — would stay open until Sunday, Jan. 30, or until supplies run out, then the restaurant would close for good.

The family-owned business cited the pandemic, the resulting loss of patronage and staffing shortages as the reason for the closure.

In the post, the owners reflected on the restaurant’s successful history, which reached its peak in 2019, with a “line out the door (every) Friday night.”

“We literally built a restaurant from nothing. Our blood, sweat and tears went into it. As we learned, nothing about the industry is easy. We had many struggles and small victories. We grew and learned exponentially over the years,” they said.

“… All the things on the radar that would potentially bring us down, a pandemic was not on it. We held up with takeout as long as possible. We reopened for dine in with all the precautions. Dropped things off the menu. We cut costs. We expanded using DoorDash. All things possible to keep going. As the pandemic raged on, we did not come close to the patrons we once had. We lost employees and struggled to keep things going being perpetually understaffed.”

The owners said they are “emotionally and financially” spent and do not have the resources to throw a full-blown goodbye party this weekend, noting they will serve patrons the best they can this weekend with their remaining staff of six people, down from 25 at its peak.

“We are heartbroken, to say the least,” they said in the post. “There are so many memories in the building. So many friends made and plenty of happy times to remember. But, unfortunately we cannot continue the struggle. It was a good run.

“None of this was possible without you, and we’ll remember you fondly as we move on to our next chapter in this life.”
