That is the Business and Tax Law Center, now in its second full year of operation at the Pew Campus of Grand Valley State University under the aegis of the Legal Institute of West Michigan.
The Legal Institute was formed by GVSU, MSU, the MSU College of Law and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. The center — a function of the bar, GVSU and MSU College of Law — serves both the legal and business communities.
Through the institute, the center offers specialized courses in business and tax law to law students, legal practitioners, graduate students in business, and corporate professionals — anyone, actually, who possesses a bachelor’s degree.
One may apply to enroll either in traditional classrooms or via video conferencing.
Students who are not pursuing a law degree can earn a certificate in either Business Law or Tax Law, and MSU law students may earn credits towards a concentration in corporate or tax law.
The center’s reason for being is the view that business and law have become virtually inextricable. A corporate leader can hardly exert leadership without a solid grounding in law, and the converse more and more applies to members of the legal profession.
