GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA) yesterday announced plans to host an event to benefit local charitable organizations this year at DeVos Place.
Based on the success of Big Daddy’s Doo Wop Sh’Bop at Van Andel Arena in May 2003, the CAA believes a similar charity event at DeVos Place can be successful.
The ’50s and ’60s music revue at the arena raised $85,000 for the Hope on Hill Fund of the Van Andel Institute and Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids. The theme and date for this year’s event is yet to be determined.
With the recent opening of the DeVos Place Ballroom, the convention center expansion project is complete, allowing the CAA to focus on an event that gives back to the community.
“We’ve had so much support from the community throughout the DeVos Place expansion project,” said Steve Heacock, CAA chairman. “We’re excited to give back to the community by supporting local charities. Not only will those attending the event be supporting a worthy cause, but they’ll be sure to have a great time!”
The charities involved in this event have not yet been determined. Interested organizations are encouraged to submit materials to Susan Waddell at 130 West Fulton, Grand Rapids, MI 49503 by Monday, March 7.
Eligibility guidelines include:
- West Michigan area charities with a 501(c) (3) status that predominantly maintain and distribute contributions and/or services within the West Michigan area.
- Encourages and participates in collaborations with other institutions.
- Benefits its constituency by increasing and improving access to necessary resources, programs and/or care.
- Participates in, or develops, programs and activities that benefit the greatest number of people.
- A proven track record of volunteerism and fund-raising and willingness to participate in the event(s) through such activities.
Interested organizations should submit the following in writing:
- Describe how the above criteria are met.
- Brief description of the organization’s purpose, history and accomplishments.
- Audited financial statements for the most recently completed fiscal year.
- Operating budget for the current year.
- List of corporations and foundations that support the organization and the most recent amounts contributed.
- Potential uses for funds received if selected by CAA.
- An IRS determination letter of tax-exempt status.
- Names and affiliations of the board of directors.
- List of any known, threatened, or pending litigation involving the organization.
The CAA reserves the right to accept and/or reject any submission for any reason or for no reason. The CAA will not select organizations that are primarily religious or political in nature, nor will direct use by individuals be permitted.
