The project team joined owner Double JJ Resort and Rothbury city officials in celebration of this completion on Nov. 30 with a grand opening ceremony.
Phase II consisted of construction of an 80,000-square-foot water park, which is now open to the public, and site work to a future convention center. The five-story building houses several indoor water slides, a wave pool, restaurant, coffee bar, offices and an arcade. This phase took less than a year to complete, according to Rockford officials.
“This project has really been a great experience for us. We’re combining several individually unique elements into one coherent development so open lines of communication between the owner, architect and ourselves have been very important. There is a real vision here, and we feel responsible for making that vision a reality, satisfying all elements of the project and developing a strong relationship with Double JJ in the process,” stated Rockford Project Executive Roger Rehkopf.
Phase I, which began in November 2005, was completed and turned over in August 2006. This initial phase included construction of Thoroughbred Suites, which is a four-story, 49-unit hotel and condominium complex. Phase I consisted of more than 72,000 square feet of construction.
Phase III, currently in the pre-construction stage, will bring a large conference center to the development. This phase is expected to begin in the spring of 2007. Phase IV will follow shortly thereafter and will bring the final hotel/condominium piece to the project. This phase is expected to kick off once the owner has received 50 percent pre-sale confirmation of the condominiums.
This was Rockford’s largest mixed-use development project by square footage in 2006. Hooker DeJong Architects & Engineers designed the project. Rockford is the general contractor. Double JJ Resorts owns the development. When the project is complete, there will be more than 100 hotel and condominium units, a water park, convention center and several amenities that make Double JJ Resort a unique family destination.
