Ferry Service Starts Today

ABOARD THE LAKE EXPRESS — After a 34-year year absence, cross-lake ferry service between Muskegon and Milwaukee resumed today as the Lake Express made its maiden voyage.

The new car ferry docked at Great Lakes Marina with a load of passengers and VIPs from Milwaukee shortly before 11:30 this morning and departed for Milwaukee a little more than an hour later.

“Welcome to Muskegon,” said Mayor Steve Warmington as he greeted debarking passengers.

While watching the ferry pull in for the first time, Warmington couldn’t help but be excited, envisioning the possibilities the service would bring to his lakeshore community in terms of travel and tourism, as well as business.

“It’s a great day for Muskegon and also for West Michigan,” he said. “Wow, it’s like Christmas.”

Lake Express plans to run three roundtrips daily between Muskegon and Milwaukee. The 192-foot vessel will have the capacity to carry 250 passengers and 46 cars and cross the lake in about two and a half hours.
