GRAND RAPIDS — Genzink Steel announced yesterday that it has been awarded a major fabrication project to provide the fabricated steel structures for coal shuttle cars to JOY Mining Machinery Co. of Franklin, Pa. The multi-million-dollar-per-year project is expected to run for at least three to five years.
“This represents a significant increase in business for us, and some of it will be subcontracted to other local machine shops,” said Ken Genzink, CEO of Genzink Steel. “We are purchasing capital equipment, adding additional personnel and rearranging our plant to accommodate this project, as well as to continue servicing the increased needs of our current customer base.”
This new award of shuttle car business follows Genzink Steel’s major deal with P&H Mining. Last year, Genzink Steel was awarded another multi-million-dollar project over three years from P&H to supply material cut and ready for fabrication of its shovels and draglines at its manufacturing facility in Milwaukee.
“It’s great to be in a growth mode again, and be part of bringing jobs to West Michigan,” said Dick Bouman, Genzink’s sales manager. “We’ve worked very hard on this one for a long time. JOY was looking for a strategic partner that could commit significant capacity and fabrication expertise for their shuttle car product line. The 24,000-pound shuttle cars are a perfect fit for Genzink Steel.”
Both JOY Mining Machinery and P&H Mining are part of JOY Global, the world leader in mining equipment manufacturing. Genzink Steel provides steel plate structures for a wide array of original equipment manufacturers and structural steel for the construction industry. Genzink officials estimate that this and other new business the firm recently won will generate more than 30 new jobs at Genzink Steel in 2005.
