HBAGGR Plans Groundbreaking

GRAND RAPIDS — The Home & Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids (HBAGGR) will break ground on its new building at 1633 East Beltline Ave. NE, just south of Knapp Street and in front of the Kent Career Technical Center, at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 1.

The 16,000-square-foot building, designed by The Architectural Group, will be named The Housing Center of West Michigan. The construction manager will be C.D. Barnes Associates Inc. Construction is estimated to take approximately one year.

“We are thrilled to be starting construction on this state-of-the-art facility that will help us better serve the general public as well as members of the HBAGGR,” said Ben Brinks of Distinctive Homes Ltd. and chairman of the Building Committee. “We are very fortunate to have a Building Committee of 16 volunteer professionals who will be guiding the building process along with C.D. Barnes Associates Inc.”

A conference center on the lower level that seats 208 people will be the location for general membership meetings, education seminars, home buying schools and remodeling schools, and also will be available to rent for public activities like wedding receptions. The middle level of the building will showcase member products and services, as well as a library and bookstore. The upper level will provide space for offices.

The project will cost $3.5 million and $750,000 in donated materials and services and cash already has been collected.

“We are planning on this new facility to be the first-stop location for potential new home buyers, as well as for people considering remodeling projects,” said HBAGGR Executive Vice President and CEO Judy Barnes. “We plan to have information and product displays on all aspects of housing in order to make the process of building or remodeling much easier and more user-friendly.”
