Lawn care company recognized for environmental stewardship

Locally owned AAA Lawn Care of Grand Rapids has announced that it is the first lawn fertilization and weed control company in Michigan to receive the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Certification. It received the certification in recognition of its fertilization and weed control practices, which ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and the training it gives its staff in pollution prevention practices.

About 65 of the state’s 860 golf courses in Michigan have achieved the certification, which is from a coalition of the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program, Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Golf Association of Michigan, Michigan State University and the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

The nationally recognized Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship program was developed at Michigan State University, where the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation was established in 1957. The nonprofit organization promotes better turfgrasses and better methods of maintenance. MTF members represent homeowners, golf courses, seed, sod and stolon growers, municipalities, parks and recreational area managers, school boards, landscape contractors, lawn maintenance contractors, custom lawn applicators, athletic associations, and cemetery associations.

“Our industry needs to lead the way in protecting the watershed from runoff through the proper application of fertilization and weed control products. Studies show that homeowners who do not use professional application services tend to over-treat by about 50 percent,” said AAA co-owner Mike Waldecker.

The company, which has been in business for 25 years, reviews its programs frequently to stay on the leading edge of environmental practices.

“We like to keep it green in every possible sense,” said AAA partner Mike Stehouwer.

AAA has thousands of residential and commercial customers throughout the Greater Grand Rapids area.
