GRAND RAPIDS — Former three-term Grand Rapids Mayor John Logie will be the recipient of the 2006 Community Leadership Award from the Convention and Arena Authority. The award will be presented March 23 at a charity event at Van Andel Arena.
Logie, who represented the city on the CAA and chaired the authority, was chosen from a lengthy list of nominees by a committee established for the award. Logie will receive the award, only the second ever to be given, for his extraordinary service to the community, his leadership, and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the county.
“I think it’s terrific. It’s a good choice,” said Joseph Tomaselli, CAA board member.
That same evening the CAA will host Big Daddy’s Doo Wop Sh’Bop, a 1950s musical revue, with all proceeds going to Gilda’s Club, St. John’s Home, and the Van Andel Institute Hope on the Hill Council.
The Marcels, the Drifters, the Coasters, the Platters and Barbara Harris are scheduled to perform. Tickets are $25 and $35 and available at all TicketMaster locations, by phone at 456-3333, online at ticketmaster.org, or at the arena box office.
Corporate tables, which include a pre-show dinner and additional general seating tickets, are also available from Gilda’s Club, St. John’s Home and the VAI.
The first CAA charity event held in 2003 raised $80,000, and honored current board chairman Steven Heacock with the first Community Leadership Award.
