Reed Group Has New Home

WALKER — First, the company reorganized.

And now the firm has consolidated its efforts at a new headquarters.

The W.S. Reed Co. and its affiliate, the Commercial Equipment Group, recently moved into a new 40,000-square-foot building in Walker at the intersection of Three Mile Road and Walkent. A desire to bring the companies together under a single roof and to have room for future growth was what drove the project.

“Our one building for the Commercial Equipment Group was over on Oak Industrial Drive for 43 years. That worked for a lot of years, but we really outgrew it and it wasn’t state of the art,” said Russ Reed, president of W.S. Reed.

“Our other facility for the W.S. Reed Co. was on Three Mile. We were there for 25 years and we just completely outgrew our facility. So this new building gives us growth for years to come and it gives us a state-of-the-art facility for all of the high technologies that we’ve moved into these days,” he added.

Pioneer Construction managed the building project, while Winklemann Associates designed the building. The structure has 20,000 square feet of warehouse space and a similar amount for offices and displays of the latest lines of high-tech office equipment the firms offer. In all, the new building gives both companies twice the space of their old locations.

“It turned out excellent,” Reed said of the building. “We custom designed it for our needs.”

Reed told the Business Journal that he has sold the company’s former locations at 2225 Oak Industrial Drive and 2121 Three Mile Road.

The companies made some organizational changes last June when Michael Reed retired as president of The Reed Group, the parent firm of W.S. Reed and Commercial Equipment, after spending 32 years with the business and directing it for the last 17 years. Russ Reed, a brother to Michael, took over the reins of W.S. Reed, and Tom Reed, another brother, began to lead Commercial Equipment.

Michael Reed stayed on as a consultant and oversaw the construction project, which now gives the company’s 12 Michigan offices a single headquarters to report to.

The Reed Group is the largest, independently owned office equipment provider in the state. The firm has over 200 employees and annual sales that top $38 million. The company made two fairly recent acquisitions that allowed it to expand its presence in the Lansing and Detroit markets, and more may be on the way.

“One of our charters is to expand and grow,” said Reed.

The Reed Group carries a full line of office equipment from names like Toshiba, RISO, Konica-Minolta, InFocus, Panasonic, Ricoh, Canon and others.

Global Imaging Systems, which has offices in 27 states and the District of Columbia, owns The Reed Group. Richard Peterson took over as president of The Reed Group last summer and is based in Pittsburgh.

“Things just came together like clockwork,” said Reed of the managerial transition and construction of the new headquarters. “Sometimes I’m afraid to pinch myself, it’s gone so well.”
