Sak Introduces License Plate Bill

LANSING — Despite Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s stated opposition to more specialty license plates in Michigan, State Rep. Michael Sak introduced a bill in the House last week that would add three more plates.

The legislation from the Grand Rapids Democrat would put the logo of the area’s three professional sports franchises on their own plate — the Griffins, Rampage and Whitecaps — with proceeds from plate sales going to the teams’ respective youth athletic programs.

Granholm, also a Democrat, made her opposition to the license plates known the day before Sak planned to introduce his bill.

Sak told the Business Journal last week that he had a one-on-one meeting with the governor on Thursday to ask her to reconsider his bill.

The legislation offered by Sak is similar to one passed by the House late last year.

That bill gives the six pro teams in Detroit specialty plates and sends the proceeds from the sales of those plates to the teams’ youth athletic programs.

The Detroit plate legislation is in the Senate transportation committee.
