Thomas Fleszar, president of Delta, announced that the Michigan corporation, along with its affiliates in Ohio and Indiana, is the first carrier in the health benefits industry to achieve ISO 9001 certification.
Fleszar, who advises that the tri-state operation is the second largest dental plan in the nation, claims Delta is unique in that no other benefits firm in the world has qualified for the certification.
The company — which has offices here as well as in Farmington Hills, Columbus, Cleveland and Indianapolis — has about 4.6 million members and reports that it pays out nearly $1 billion in claims annually.
Deloitte & Touche Quality Registrar Inc. recommended the certification award, commenting that “… three areas — internal quality audit, continuous improvement and management responsibility — demonstrated levels of excellence significantly beyond that normally witnessed.”
The International Organization for Standardization has been developing standards since 1947, but it was only in the year 2000 that the institution expanded its scope beyond manufacturing and engineering to embrace all industry areas by focusing on quality, customers and continuous improvement.
Delta’s director of corporate audit and quality assurance Laura Czelada says, “ISO 9001 certification means ‘We say what we do, we do what we say, we prove it and improve it.’”
Among the firm’s 4000 group clients are General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Kimball International and the State of Michigan.
