GRAND HAVEN — New owners took over operations at Zelenka Nursery Inc., in the wake of the wholesale grower’s sale to a Tennessee-based nursery during a bankruptcy auction.
Judkins Nursery successfully bid $20 million for Zelenka and assumed operations on Oct. 27.
Zelenka Nursery, one of the largest employers in Ottawa County and the owner of some 2,200 acres of land, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Chicago after a consortium of creditors began to push the company toward liquidation.
“The company’s doing fine, we’re alive and we’re pleased with the outcome,” said Tom Ablum, the former chairman of Zelenka.
Judkins Nursery, one of three parties submitting a bid at the Oct. 22 auction, plans to maintain Zelenka’s name and operations in Ottawa County, Ablum said.
